My relationship with my models

Updated: May 8, 2020

Growing up, the only models I've ever had were my close friends. It has taught me that every photographer-model dynamic in a shoot depends on their own personal dynamic which very much influences the turnout of the photos, so it is very important in building a relationship of trust and understanding.

It is also really important to be in sync with your partner. As a photographer you need to understand the way your model moves, their natural tempo, and their current mood. As a model you need to also understand the pace of the photographer and which positions they seem to naturally repeat and adjust accordingly.

Usually the photographer and model have a chance to get acquainted and get to know each other well enough to maintain a professional relationship, yet if you meet on the day of the shoot it usually helps to take a few minutes to introduce yourselves and converse in a friendly ongoing manner to put both at ease.

For really shy models it helps to put music on, and it also brings in a flow to the pictures.

It is also very important to constantly talk about what your expectations are of the shoot and your visions from both sides and be aware of each other's wants and needs.
